Portfolio Update 31 August 2016

Overall, August has been a quiet month in equity market. The world's attention was drawn to Rio Olympic games. The corporate earnings in Singapore were not impressive, Fed Chief Ms Yellen's hawkish speech on possible rate hike in September, news on Zika virus discovered in Singapore all weighed on market sentiment. STI was in negative territory most of the month.

The Straits times index closed today at 2,820.59, downed 48.10 points, or 1.68% from last month. My portfolio did slightly better than the index. Its value dropped only 0.71% for the month August.

This month, I topped up Lian Beng and Global Investment Ltd. I received shares from Noble Group via rights issue. I also received some shares from Keppel Reit and Fraser Commercial Reit via scrip dividend scheme. There was no sell trade. Total fund injection into the portfolio was S$12,710.00.

Many companies paid dividend in August. My passive income in August amounts to S$20,855, which surprisingly was higher than August last year. Most of the dividend this month was from stocks. YTD the dividend received was about the same as last year. The dividend from additional investment compensated the reduction of dividend pay-out from some counters.

Below are my top 30 counters as at 31 August 2016. Global Investment jumped up due to new buy-in, while Ascendas H Tr was replaced by Nera Tel. Sing Tel dropped a few position due to price drop in the last few days.

hi sanye,
nice 20k dividend for u in august. I also opted for shares in fcot, which i think was a good deal at around 1.305.
welcome to the lian beng club. i also added more lian beng in july before the dividend announcement. i and bullish on this counter in the long run. I am of the view that the company is into building recurring income. its purchases in the hdb heartland already is worth much of its market cap already.
recently i added more singpost and frasers ct, and opted for scrip for uob.

King Yoland,

Nice to hear from you again. I already have some Lian Beng shares, this was a topping up. I am looking to buy more SingPost as well, since the price has dropped and I still like the counter for long term investment. I will take a look at FCT, have not paid too much attention to this steady guy.

Cheers!

Hi Sanye

Interesting that you increased your position in GIL there. Im currently taking a look at it too and noticed a few bloggers have added to this.

Hi B,

Thanks for leaving your comment. When assessing GIL, their regular dividend pay out was the main point I like it.

Hi Sanye,
Is neratel a good stock to continue hold for long term since they intend to sell payment solution. They have good dividend though.

Regards,
Jason

Hi Jason,

The disposal of the Payment Solution is completed in August. The share price was not affected adversely by the sales. I still think that this is a good stock to hold. Just my humble opinion.

hi sanye, agreed that it pays regularly but what are your views on the previous rights issues for GIL?

Hi King Yoland,

The last rights issue was quite a while ago. Was it in 2013? Honestly I can't remember the details. Paiseh!

Hi, just chance upon your blog. Very impressived with your portfolio and how you managed it throughout the years. I have a lot of reading to do here. I been investing since GFC and see about 40% similarity between our stock selections. Just curious on how you define when the dividends are collected, do you based it on ex date or actual date of receiving the money?

Hi Anonymous,

Thank you for visiting my blog. This blog was initially intended to serve as a record to myself. That it attracts quite a number of readers is a pleasant surprise to me.

I define the dividend collection date as the date when the money is in my bank account, or the scripts are received. I think it is not very important how we define it, as long as there is consistency.
