Portfolio Update 31 May 2018

So it was the magical month of May again. Those traders who believe in "Sell in May and stay away" and have sold their shares at the beginning of the month would have told their peers "see, I told you so....", but as a die-hard dividend investor I have not done it.

Equity market did not do well in May. Lead by US, indices dropped in May. the Malaysian election result, the Trumpf-Kim summit, US-Sino trade war etc all did not affect the market positively. As at end of May, STI dropped 185.75, or 5.14% from a month ago. My portfolio dropped less than the index. Its value decreased 2.84% for the month. I am not surprised as many counters went XD this month.

I sold my Hyflux preferential shares at the beginning of the month, at a loss of course. The loss was quite minimal as I had only a very small stake, and have been receiving 6% dividend for many years. I bought some QAF shares when its price dropped below $1, cost averaging. I also received some Fraser Commercial Trust and Keppel Reit shares through scrip dividend scheme.

On the dividend side, May has always been a "dividend month" for me. This month, I received a total of S$29,441 in dividend, the highest so far for a single month. The dividend comes mainly from shares, and a smaller portion from UT's and Bonds.

below are my top 30 holdings as at 31 May 2018.

Hey what's your thought on Lee Metal? Good time to acceptance the offer @ 42 cents?

Sanye ◎ 三页 said...

Hi Jason,

as at 8 June, 92% have accepted the offer, so the offer is likely to turn un-conditional. Done deal.

Hi Terry Wang,

Thank you for visiting my blog.

I am male. Age? Near retirement age.

Is 3.25 a good entry point for SingTel? Frankly, your guess is as good as mine.I don't plan to increase my Singtel share holding at this moment.

Dear Sanye;

Wow.. near retirement... Currently, I am 35 yo and my passive for my shares is only $5k/year... long way to reach your $25k/quarter....

I have also invested in A) City Spring & B)Lippo Malls... etc.

Concerned in (B)
Would like to hear your view on (B) Lippo Malls, based on the current situation is the dividend sustainable and what is your min. threshold value if any.

I bought at a high price of avg. $0.385 & now is $0.32 due to the rights issue, presidential election, currency inflation....
Not sure if I should go in and buy some more or sell this counter

Dear Sanye;

I also invested in UT.

May I know is it UOB Investment Trust you invested in?

I need a buddy like you for advice. Cheers

Regards
Terry

Dear Terry,

I am not able to give you advice on Lippo Mall Trust. My measure against those concerns you have is simple: Diversification. Lippo Mall Trust is only 1% of my share portfolio,so I am not overly concern about its price movement.

I don't invest in UOB Investment Trust.

Dear Sanye;

Ok. thanks for your advice and will diverse to other Shares.

Sorry to bother you.
Sanye, as you are a veteran in the stock market, may I ask you of this common stuff I always hear.
Every 10 Years there is a Market Correction / Crisis.

Is that true?
If you think that is true and our previous Crisis, 1997, LEMHAN BRO. 2008/-, do you think have this cycle is coming soon?

Regards
Terry Wang

Dear Terry,

Stock market does go through cycles.There will be correction or crisis. The question is: Is there a rigid cycle that this will happen after X years? There are many theories out there but the truth is, no one knows for sure.

What we can do is: Watch out for any sign of such melt down. Have a reserve war-chest to react to the market correction. Have enough reserve to tie us over the crisis. Last but not least, invest in good quality shares and set your sight for long term investment. These are my game plan.

I don't know when the next correction will come, but I am prepared when it comes.

Dear Sanye;

Can I ask you the percentage of Cash you have used?

i.e.
Cash - 15 %
Stocks - 35 %
Property - 50 %

Is the above % similar to what you are having now?

Regards
Terry

Dear Terry,

I don't invest in property. I own only one property, where I live.

At the moment I have higher percentage in cash - about 20% CPF included.
